I am shocked at how well-written this book is. I haven't flown through the pages of a book like this in a long time. I definitely feel this book is misjudged I feel that it isan important period piece if you want to truly understand the South before, during, and after the Civil War. Insanely readable, with well-realized characters, and fantastic descriptions of life in Northern Georgia.

Read the problematic parts of the book today where Mitchell justifies the KKK and insults the abilities of Black people.
Tough to read and nothing justifies slavery, but I still don't think it should discount the epic scope of the novel and what it accomplishes. It offers a lot of interesting insight into the South and into people and their motivations. Important to approach the book with the right lens.

Long book, but so far I cant think of anything that should be cut. Its a long epic with complex characters and their interactions in a changing world, kind of needs to be long.
