Ok, so I’m 3/4 way through book 2 and I just figured out why it was such a mega deal for Asher to become an artist (outside of it just not being done in his community). He was in line to be the Rebbe. I just didn’t realize this was a hereditary thing passed from father to son. No idea that The Rebbe is Asher’s grandfather. It all makes so much more sense now.
