A hard-boiled detective for the most part except that Hammett doesn't go into how any of the character's feel or reveal their thoughts, only showing their facial expressions and what they do/say. It's nice this way for a quick read, and Hammett doesn't have his characters thoughts go into any political grandstand reflective of his later connections of the 1930's and beyond.
