I admit; I bought this book for the cover. I did like the story, for its obvious metaphor (almost an allegory) of US/Western civ.

I'm somewhat similar- though I've also read and liked Brust before. But the cover gave me Gormenghast vibes, and I'll always read something if there's a chance for that
