Booksta tells me “weird girl” fiction is a new trend but is it new? What about Sylvia Plath, Daphne du Maurier, Patricia Highsmith, Shirley Jackson, Barbara Comyns, Doris Lessing, Muriel Spark, Natsuo Kirino, just off the top of my head--what are their novels if not “weird girl” fiction? Haven’t writers have always loved writing about unhinged women teetering on the brink of disaster? Somebody explain to me.
