Trying out this translation/commentary again. Last time I thought the Garfield version was better but now I am not so sure 🤔

Mesoscope It's so important to have multiple translations, and to compare them - multiple commentaries, too, I find. The ones I keep going back to are Garfield's complete translation of Tsongkhapa's commentary Ocean of Wisdom and the Mabja commentary, which is much more straightforward, but doesn't always explain everything fully.

I hope some day John Dunne finally publishes his translation of Chandrakirti's commentary, it's astonishing that hasn't appeared in a complete English translation yet.

derris I agree! I have tried tackling the Tsongkhapa one but that might be one of the most dense things I have ever attempted to read lol. I think I just need to slow down and try again though.

I usually focus on the verses that need explication, or the sections that provide important arguments. For some of the key chapters, like 18 and 24, I'll read the whole thing.

Mabja, you can just read straight through - he stays closer to the text. Also, I think the translation is a little less convoluted.
