Ada, a 10 year old girl with clubfoot, lives in the slums of London. Because of her disability, she is neglected by her mother. With that, she and her little brother Jamie make a run for it and end up being taken in by a stern woman named Susan Smith, who is a recluse. There, they learn trust and are genuinely cared for, which was very new to them. Susan says, "Don't worry, Ada, you'll be safe here" (Bradley 62).
