Rose Rosetree Reading this, Ryan Bartz, it's helpful to realize how Tolkien was shaped by the horrors he experienced in World War 1.

Ancient history it may seem to us, but it trickled down through his masterpiece novels. Battle of good and evil is such a perennial theme, you know?
