What a tragic situation for an older man to find himself in. I suppose my own age makes me feel his predicament more than I might have when younger. I think it is a kind of universal fear in aging people that they will end up at the mercy of someone who does not care for them or a burden on someone they love. Sadly, both of these are realities for Nariman.

I'm so glad you are touched by this, Sara. I know that as we get older we can relate to older, frail characters in a way we never could in our younger years.

When we are young it never occurs to us that it might be us someday. I am always wishing I could tell my mother how much more I understand now of what she went through!
My mother was a difficult person, but now that I'm not constantly at odds with her, I feel like I can understand why. I'll be looking for a copy of this.
I is funny how our perspective shifts as we age, Diane. I didn't understand why my mother worried so much about where we were when we went out until I spent my first sleepless night waiting for someone to come home who was late doing so. She raised seven children...I'm surprised she survived it.

Of course, that leads us to enjoy and understand novels covering different subjects as well. At this point we have all cared for an aging person - and the next round of the "cared for" is us. Hmmmm - that's a little heavy for this very cold Saturday morning!
