My assumption about the simplicity of the dialogues and insufficient character development at the very beginning of the book proved completely wrong for the rest of the novel. I guess the author was adding complexity gradually to make sure the reader wasn't overwhelmed. I can only say bravo to that. Really enjoying reading it.

Ok, the narrative got much better. A very educational and touching story about the hardships of the Jewish population really caught my attention.

Some unnaturally simplistic communication between characters at the very beginning of the book. Seems like this is a great dive into the history of Paris, with some storylines to make it at least a little more fun to read. Not much in terms of some serious character development so far.
