page 76 of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Changez is talking in the present to the American at the restaurant. He starts to feel that the man knows something when he says, “or perhaps… But enough of these speculations!” Even though Changez believes they have never met, the man seems to know details about him. Since the word mission is italicized on the first page, I think the man was sent to Pakistan to meet Changez

On page 40, we learn more about Wainwright. The author does not state his race, but I think he is Pakistani or from a similar region. I believe this because Changiz feels comfortable taking him to a local Punjabi deli where the workers know Changiz well, even though the interview at Underwood & Sampson shows that Changiz usually hides his home life.

Erica and Changez meet again in New York City, and each time they meet they seem closer. Still, their relationship feels close to ending. Changez is clearly in love with Erica, but Erica cannot let go of her feelings for her past relationship with Chris. She knows she is not ready to move on, so she keeps Changez close and depends on his polite and caring nature.

You can tell Jim really resonates with Changez. I think that this is because he sees himself in Changez and feels a closeness/familiarity with him. The author shows this by having Jim ask comparing questions about changez’s background in the interview. I also really like the questions the author wrote for jim to ask. Asking uncomfortable questions for changez gives us a better science of his character and who he is.
