just finished chapter one. the narrator reminds me of eleanor oliphant - quite uptight and straightlaced (this narrator is rather humourless though). her life sounds idyllic to me but she seems oddly unhappy with her solitude? (like genuinely unhappy with it, not just worried about "appearing normal", she seems to actually want more socialising). nothing's happened yet.

my god, Alix is AWFUL. i don't know what's going on yet but she's fucking around with the narrator and her relationship. it's so depressingly realistic i need a drink to finish this. (on an unrelated note the author is very observant of and able to describe relationship dynamics which is a gift)...

alix might be fun to be around but underneath she is really toxic. this is picking up speed now. i think she wants to wreck the narrator's relationship and then discard her.

so the narrator has unexpectedly got a boyfriend (aww!) and they're kind of a sweet and shy couple. alix prods her for details and seems unsatisfied at the narrator's response, so to get around this she has just persuaded him to move into the spare room. (wtf! now she'll know if he stays out overnight or whatever... oh! goodbye privacy.) she's really too overinvolved. the narrator will need to handle her carefully...

she's well and truly under their spell now. alix is just using the narrator for admiration, she doesn't actually like her, and it isn't anything lasting or good. i don't get the appeal of this set up for the narrator.

Oh no. She's fallen in love with this dreadful power couple. The wife has invited her for dinner. This is a bad combination.

there's something not right here. the doctor and his wife have come to the narrator's house. first they crack up about how it's decorated. and they're trying to get her to move out and into their spare room to "keep an eye on her" and "bring in extra money". this is all suss. i don't like the wife.

this seems like it may be rather short. it's from the perspective of an observant librarian (which thrills me!) it seems to be set in a medical or academic type library but with a focus on mental health? so far it's ticking all the boxes for something that should be a good fit. nothing has happened yet but maybe this is the "world building" part? am feeling cautiously optimistic...
