While she writes about suffering and the experience of exile, she often does it from a very privileged, upper-class perspective (as the niece of Salvador Allende). This "looking down" on so-called "banana republics" is likely what feels so aggravating – it comes across as condescending and ignores the shared history of the continent.

Allende taps into the cliché Chile is exceptional. For readers from Argentina or other neighboring countries, this often feels like a slap in the face, especially considering that Chile itself went through a very dark period of dictatorship.
