missionary slice of life? catholic travelogue of the western frontier? so far, a lovely series of vignettes that stand up well alone, but combined form a tender picture of the wild west, the innocence of this new world, and the holiness of human compassion—in opposition to the gore-steeped nihilism of cormac mccarthy's blood meridian (which i will repeat, i utterly hated). i've been told this is strange but maybe bc i'm constitutionally incapable of having faith in any higher power, i've always been interested in picking at the minds of those who do.
