I fancied the pants off Jennifer Hallet in the first two books but I'm starting to suspect what works brilliantly for an entertaining side character doesn't work near as well for a bona fide love interest.

True. I ended up liking her. But honestly she was way too much of a jerk sometimes in this book

Oh yeah, I still like her too, it's just her yelling profanities at random contestants hits a bit different than when she does it at the woman she's supposed to end up with.
