Second chapter wasn't quite as engaging as first because I felt Bergson got bogged down in biological explanations that might be outdated by now with MRI and MEG imaging of brains. Curious to see where he goes next...

Chapter 3 brings back the fire and magic of the first chapter, moving back from biology to philosophy!

The first chapter of this detonated mind explosions on almost every page, both with ideas I have had before but could never quite find words for and also explanations for those ideas that were clearly written and fascinating to follow.

Noel Interesting you should say that because I felt that way about the first chapter. How common is it for a philosopher to be so concerned with scientific detail? I guess it makes sense for Bergson given his particular concerns—at least in this book.

Goatboy I do think Bergson was one of the few in the early 20th century but I could be wrong. Apparently Bergson was very keyed in to all the latest discoveries in not only biology/psychology but also physics and science. There's a great book if you haven't read it yet called The Physicist and the Philosopher (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...) which details Bergson's great debate with Einstein over the meaning and reality of time. When the debate happened everyone assumed that Einstein had won and Bergson then fell out of favor and sort of disappeared from the scene, only later for philosophers and some other physicists to reconsider whether some of what Bergson argued might be more right than first assumed.
