Compared to Lonesome Dove, the pacing runs at a blinding speed. There are so many precarious situations Call and Gus find themselves in, one right after another. This book is about half the size of Lonesome Dove, so there isn’t really time for all the character building, which isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s just such a constant state of emergency that I had to suspend my belief a little too much.
