That must have been a trick of Wintermute. After Case returned to his apartment. Three Turing police in white sports clothes were waiting for him, telling him he was under arrest.

Case arrived at the Rue Jules Verne, a enourmous bar area. He went there to search for Riviera in Straylight.

Case found out Moly was in a private cubicle within a nightclub, so he went down there to find her. While Case was trying to open cubicle forty-three, Molly thought he was some unknown guy, so she kicked him hard. After Case went inside, Molly talked about her past, mentioning she was a meat-puppet. She said she was going to kill Riviera during the run.

While Case was dealing with the hangover from his drugs on the floating restaurant, Riviera gave an absurd, dream-like performance on the stage. It implied Molly's past and Riviera's imagination, which made it really awkward. Molly vanished without a trace after the show was over. Case returned to the hotel, had Flatline on the phone, and traced her whereabouts.

When Case returned to the hotel, he was dying for a buzz(a high). He ascended to the roof, trying to gain dopamine from sushi so he could forget the urge. A woman named Cath chatted him up, and he received a drug called Betaphenethylamine from her that could get through his doctored system. Molly warned him he would be in sadass shape when it wore off.

After Molly handed the medicine to Riviera. Case was sent back to the tug at the end of the spindle. He received a military-grade virus that could hack into an AI. He asked Flatline more about the motive of the AI. Flatline replied that no one trusted the AIs. They most likely were going to unshackle the chains that were preventing Wintermute from evolving.

Molly and Case settled in a sloped hotel called the Intercontinental. Case couldn't sleep well since his dreams were like edited segments of memory. In the morning, they were having breakfast on the rooftop of the hotel, surrounded by artificial grass and trees. Armitage and Riviera arrived on the roof, and Riviera was asking for more medicine from Molly.

While being in limbo, that was orchestrated by Wintermute. It appeared as Julius Deane and met Case in his office. It implied that it was only part of an AI, not the whole AI itself. And informed that Armitage was going to come apart in a few days because of his condition. Case thanked the AI by shooting Deane in its head.

While the tug was sailing, Case jacked in with Flatine. They snuck into the Swiss banking sector. Wintermute, a simple cube of white light, was recessed in the loft. Case tried to punch in, but a sphere with a face detached itself from the cube. Case panicked, trying to jack out. But he was caught by Wintermute and thrown into a dream-like scene.

Case and Molly were on board the tug Marcus Garvey, a steel drum nine metres long and two in diameter. Case told Molly about the incident that happened back in Istanbul. Molly urged Case to talk to the Flatline about it right away.
