upon reading reviews and praise for Jazz in the pages before the novel, i learned it is widely considered to be the first Morrison novel that clearly establishes her writing style. i am immediately seeing and feeling this sentiment to be true. the conversational nature in which the story is told gives it an easy-to-love depth i didn't expect. I feel that I have read 60 pages more, in the best way.

knowing my love for Morrison's writing, i was disappointed to see how short this title was. however, the atmosphere is incredibly oppressive; i don't think a higher page length would be necessary. the actual plot is so fluid in who it adheres to that if i had not read it in sections the way i have been, i may have been frustrated and even a little disappointed. i am intrigued in how this will end.

i feel the book has finally lulled me into its core, but something about the way it's written has a vague feeling. the events always feel like distant memories, even when there is tension. i'm intrigued by the contrasts between Dorcas and Violet, and fascinated by the parallels present between Jazz and Beloved. At first, dubbing this a part of a trilogy stumped me, but i now understand the connection.
