I'm having a really hard time taking these characters seriously. Salem reads like a thirteen year old and her relationship with her boyfriend feels even more chaste and juvenile. There has been some hints about sexual abuse in her past so it kind of makes sense, but either way it makes the thing with Thayer come across as really off.
