I remember my English teacher saying she had to take a break from reading this when it first came out because it was so depressing. I disagreed, too young to understand, but now I get it.
His Dark Materials are full of Lyra's adventurous spirit, her tipping into adolescence, but the Book of Dust goes into her early twenties and, my God, all that adventure is gone. The loneliness and self-hatred is oppressive. Whew.
