There’s not much to separate the die off at the start of The Stand from every other apocalyptic story written since. And there’s very little in the first half of this collection to change my mind about that EXCEPT these two excellent stories “The African Painted Dog” by Catriona Ward and "Till Human Voices Wake Us, and We Drown" by William Martin (credited as Poppy Z. Brite).
