Holy shit. This book manages to make you feel sad for the ways of life that were wiped out by Manifest Destiny, dread for those about to lose their lands, and sympathy for the whites who had to endure constant horse raids and attacks that seemed random and disproportionately violent, all at the same time. One of those rare books where the whites play the antagonist, but they aren't vilified. No wonder it's a classic.

I want to read more classics this year, but most of my local library's books are contemporary. Saw this one on the shelf, was intrigued, checked it out. It's good so far.
