i have just completed the chapter regarding suicide. i really appreciate Andrew Solomon for how he approaches this subject. he writes from a place of empathy and understanding. it is emphasized that there are countless reasons why a person could be drawn to take their own life and one reason isn’t necessarily more valid than the other. ‘suicide is the mind’s rebellion against itself’ (page 282).

“If your hair has always been thin, it seems thinner; if you have always had bad skin, it gets worse. You smell sour even to yourself. You lose the ability to trust anyone, to be touched, to grieve. Eventually, you are absent from yourself.”
