I’m not sure what to think of this one yet. The mystery compels me to find out more, but I think I perhaps am too autistic to understand or appreciate the relationship between Axl and Beatrice. It is perhaps the most British thing I’ve ever read - reference acknowledged but not intended - and I frequently find myself mystified by the teasing, irreverent relationships between Brits who love one another.

This is a great book, but so beautifully crafted that it’s slow going, because I find myself wanting to concentrate on every word and analyse every action and description, perhaps to solve a mystery that I’m not sure is even there. As someone who has always sped through books - I could read 5-6 Babysitters’ Club books in a day as a kid - this is unusual for me, even though my reading pace has slowed with age.
