Emmanuel If you consider that spoken words came before writing itself, then the original "reading" was just listening to someone teaching or telling a story. Maybe someone could say reading is harder, but I disagree. These days, I can barely sit through a lecture. So, I do respect people who prefer audiobooks. If you read or listen to, just do it with attention and the experience should be the same

Emmanuel It's always interesting to remember that "The Odyssey" and "The Iliad" were traditionally declaimed before being written somewhere along the line. It seems that audiobooks are older than books themselves xD

sofia Such a good point, Emmanuel. Remembering the oral tradition definitely makes the pro-audiobook side of the debate feel pretty unassailable. I think part of my hesitation is maybe sensory? I’m so used to associating “reading” with sitting still and focusing that it feels strange to be able to wash dishes or do chores while listening to a book. At the same time, just sitting and listening without doing anything else feels oddly uncomfortable too, which is probably more a reflection of my overstimulated brain than the format itself. If I’m actively listening and engaging with the text, though, it seems hard to argue that it’s somehow less valid. Thanks for the validating comment, I tend to agree! :)

Marie ☩ yes, although it's not my preferred choice! i'll use audiobooks on days when i'm too busy to pick up a physical book.
