She was so hungry for affection, but she had never noticed it until now. When his warmth filled her, she became aware of the vast void inside her. The realization terrified her. Riftan had come to occupy the deepest recesses of her heart; he had the power to shatter her, to crush her will to live. If his devotion to her withered, Maxi was certain her future would hold nothing but utter desolation.

"What do you hate, then?" Riftan eventually asked.

Maxi hesitated over her answer. Lashings, shouting, and beatings were the first things that came to mind, but she could not reveal that part of her past. Still, she did not want to lie to a man who said he detested liars.

"M-Myself." Maxi blurted the truth softly.

"You're begging for me to release you after you attacked my people?" Riftan's fury reached its boiling point. "No. Surrender or die where you stand. Choose."

"Oh, my sweet, innocent lady. Don't make it so hard for me to leave you," Riftan whispered.

im still wondering why riftan is so head over heels for maxi??? likE their marriage was ARRANGED (!) by duke croyso?? maybe it was riftan all along who asked for maxi's hand in marriage? 😳😳😳😳😳 we'll stay tuned

When she spotted a bouquet of wildflowers in Riftan's hand, he hurriedly hid it under his cloak.
"It's nothing," he said, looking away."
