Seriously, Levin finds this somewhat compelling and never, ever, in all of this asks, "hey, what evidence is of ANY OF THIS BEING EVEN REMOTELY TRUE?"

First time around, I made it all the way to page 670. Hopefully, I’ll finish it this time. I am still so bored eith everything concerning Levine and Kitty, though.

Tolstoy (whom Levin is based on) didn't make it, dying as he did in 1910.

But it really puts the ending in a really stark light, doesn't it. I'm reminded of, of all things, an anime about high school girls fighting to be accepted as baseball players in the Taisho period. All I could think was, "You're young enough to still be around for WWII, a lot of your future children will die, too."
Anna was probably the smartest, that train assured her a quick death, at any rate.
