“...I explained the ceremony and offered them the chance to opt out. And Dr. Pepperdine carefully calibrated the dosages. These girls, they have so much trauma. LSD can help them challenge maladaptive beliefs and try out new perspectives. And an experience like this will cement them as a group....”

I'm usually not a stickler for plot holes but why is the guy in charge of this whole operation surprised that her passport is forged when she gave him her passport in the beginning?? He didn't notice that it was her sister's name?? The same sister that he was probably SA'ing?? 🤔🤔

“Unlike Hee-Young, I’ve got a cruel streak in me— from my mother, from my father, I don’t know. I could never love anything the way I love myself, and I know exactly what kind of mother I’d be.”

“my ancestors are Korean, like yours. We’re Koryo-saram—Koreans that moved to Vladivostok a century ago. Within two generations, my family had become part of the fabric—ranking members in the party, going to important dinners, working and living their lives. And then Stalin deported them all to Central Asia and left them to starve. Most of them did.”

“When we’re finished, I glance at the mirror and my stomach rolls. Like hanbok, kimono are modest garments, but the interpretation in front of me is the Asian sister of Heta’s sexy milkmaid outfit— tight, short, and sleek.”

“Ancient brides were treated as property—virgins who often had their eyelids glued shut on their wedding day so they couldn’t see the much older strangers they were being forced to marry. But unlike the concubine, they were upheld as icons of purity, a representation of society functioning in harmony and as it should—as long as the opinion of the bride wasn’t considered.”

Can't tell if that makes it better or worse to be honest. Cultists are horrifying. But sometimes I genuinely can't tell the difference between cults and religion. And I feel bad saying that but damn. I've had my share of horrific experiences at the hands of both. I know there's worse than my own experiences but. Ugh. And Oof. and HUHH
