I had a difficult time keeping my attention fixed on the old man. The sconces’ light made the valuable stones twinkle, teasing me with their preciousness. I really needed a few minutes alone with one of these walls.

I narrowed my gaze across the pointy rocks to a band of five hooded figures on the other side. Five against one . . . and a quarter, maybe a quarter. Not ideal. Should I change into my Drae

Clearing my throat, I chanted, “Water, water, in the skin, turn to nectar and I’ll . . .” I paused, thinking hard for a suitable rhyming word. “Grin, win, thin . . . din?”
“What are you doing?” Tyrrik asked.
I yelped and threw the skin in the air. The liquid, still water, spilled over the rocks.

I uncorked the water skin and stuck my forefinger in the hole, wiggling the digit around and thinking of nectar and Tyrrik being better as I hummed. Removing my finger, I sniffed at the contents. Still water, delicious water . . .

I chewed and spoke around my food. “Um, did you want any?”
Tyrrik snorted. “If I do?”
I chewed again, pushing the food to the side of my mouth. “I’m not sure, honestly. I was hoping you’d say no.”

“Doesn’t matter, does it?” he said. “Although, I’ll give it to you if you stay for another lesson.”
The ruby was a real treasure. I’d put it in the secret spot, too. I’d take extra, extra care no one found it.
