@SL, I also thought that at first, but now I think it's not that far off from his other works. Yeah, it's not supernatural horror, but this story does take place in the same universe as IT (in Derry, Maine). And it's as much a thriller as it is historical/ time-travel science fiction!
There was also a TV show based on the book with, I think, James Franco as the main character.
