As someone who reads a lot of psychological thrillers, I thought I was prepared — but Penance caught me off guard. It’s my first experience with a true-crime–novel, and the opening is shockingly dark and violent, particularly in its portrayal of teenage girls. The brutality is unsettling, yet as I continue reading, my curiosity only deepens about what’s still to come.
