A masterful blend of memoir and style guide. An utterly inspiring, addictive and accessible piece of non-fiction that sheds compelling insight on King’s life, before revealing the literary tools and mechanics that helped construct it - and then imparting its gifts to those looking to unlock their writing craft. So honest, so reassuring. Just helpful, unputdownable stuff. It’s perfect.

I read On Writing as a way to research the form of writing for my HSC English Extension 2 studies and it was awesome! I felt like I got something out of it, unlike Freud/Jung Letters. The autobiography on King's life is terrific and fascinating, but the writing advice he gives is inspiring and truthful. On Writing is one of his best books and provides more evidence that King is a great writer outside of horror.
