It’s very difficult to slip into such books. Everything about them is contrived: the characters are a strange hybrid of nineteenth century tropes with of course the modern touch which makes relating to them quite challenging. The conversation then become fake. Then there is the plot itself which, even in books of a more straightforward construction, requires skill to setup and slowly pull the reader in.
