Molly had the right attitude and posture when she was marching down the stairs. It was like the culmination of a life-stime's observation of martial arts tapes. But she missed it by a fraction it seemed.

Molly kept venturing into the straylight. She came across a rough tunnel blasted from solid rock. Dark sand spread across the floor. There were Riverera's caricatures and twisted holograms across the tunnel. As Molly arrived at the entrance of 3Jane's world. She descended down through the uneven stairs, gave Case a kiss on her left palm, and prepared to kill Riviera.

As Case jacked into the Matrix again, he flipped in and out with the Sim-stim. The Chinese program was making good progress against the T-A cores. A brownish dot appeared against the green wall of the cores. It started walking towards Case and Flatline. It was Wintermute; it evinced that the rewards would be waiting for all of them once they finished their mission.

Since the bridge was not air-tight. By launching Corto himself into space, that would be a death sentence. Case pounded on the door, telling Corto that they left his hatch open and he would die. But Corto was in a state of schizophrenia; he was in an isolated world. The escape pod was launched, and Armitage drifted endlessly around Freeside.

Armitage contacted Case through a lozenge of white light in the matrix. For Armitage, Wintermute showed up as General Girling in the matrix. That rendered Armitage unstable, Corto was resurfacing under the mask of Armitage, breaking through. After another lapse with Molly traversing the Straylight. Armitage was in a bloody state, as shown on the tug's monitor.

Ashford soliloquized for a little while and fell asleep. He had been in a state of delirium since he was over 200 years old. Molly walked next to the bed. There was the body of a girl. It was a clone of Ashford's daughter. After she had a glance around. She ended Ashford's misery by injecting a toxin dart through the centre of his closed left eyelid.

It turned out there was a neural disruptor's field outside the door. Molly was hit and fell onto the floor. An old man came out, pointed the muzzle of a black pistol at her, and told her to come into the room. The old man was Ashford. He was slowly killing himself by drinking and consuming drugs. He acknowledged that he knew the intelligences were going mad.

Molly came across an old door; she drew a needle-thin pick from her roll of black chamois and unlocked it. She found a sort of key inside the cramped room. After that, she headed into a corridor that branched away in three directions. Wintermute directed Molly to go left, but she decided to have a look around. At the far end of the right passage came a voice, loud and slurred.

Case's conscience was back in the matrix. He tapped into his sim-stim. Molly was in a low, vaulted hallway lined with dozens of museum cases, archaic-looking glass-fronted boxes made of brown wood. Molly started talking about a boy she was with called Johnny. They were together, and the Yaks were after them. By ignorance of youth, they thought they could get away with it.

Wintermute brought Case into the core of Straylight. A perfectly square room. In the exact centre of the room, stood a square pedestal of frosted white glass. An ornate bust rested on it. The thing's a ceremonial terminal; Wintermute needed Molly in there with the right word at the right time. Case and Flatline will have to learn the word when they scrambled the cores.
