When he was gone, Aurienne allowed herself to fix Mordaunt's hair.
A living Mordaunt would never permit his hair to be in this state; the mess made him look like he must be dead.
It was the excuse she made for herself, anyway, as she ran her fingertips through silver-white strands.
There was no excuse for brushing a gentle hand along his cheek.

BACK AT MORDAUNT'S BEDSIDE, AURIENNE OFF-LOADED HER PILFERED goods onto his (her) bedside table. She descended to the kitchen to fetch boiling water for a few doses of bhreue.

Mordaunt was awake when she returned-still not quite himself, his eyes were unfocused and his greeting was uncharacteristically affectionate (“You're back. I missed you”).

Her wide, shocked eyes reminded him that her hand wasn't, and would never be, his to kiss.

"Clutch my-don't kill them," said Aurienne, stepping in front of him. "They're idiots-utterly lacking in judgement. We must give them a chance."
"You've already given them a chance," said Mordaunt. "Besides, they threatened to kidnap you."
"And? You threatened to kidnap me."
"Exactly: only I can do that.

"Pretty?" interjected Mordaunt. "Who's prettier, her or me?"
One bandit piped up that she had better eyelashes but he had better cheekbones, and thus mortally insulted them both.
The bandit chief emerged from the conference and said, "About the same."
Aurienne gasped in outrage. Mordaunt, labouring under the delusion that he was prettier, also gasped.
"Well," said Mordaunt, "now you're definitely going to die."

Mordaunt waved a hand. "My mark today did make a stabbing attempt—but he only had a spoon."
"A spoon?"
"He was eating yoghurt," said Mordaunt, by way of explanation.
"You— you killed someone while they were eating yoghurt?"
"Yes. It was good yoghurt, too."
"You ate the yoghurt?"
"After he was dead, yes. He'd hardly touched it. What? What's the matter? Have you mistaken me for someone respectable?"

So I don’t know how I feel about it yet

But I like Osric so far
