Oh no, I was liking him so far, but he is a grosssss sexist and specieist. After talking so much about justice, equity and love... He says this: "Between woman and man there may exist love, passion, ties of custom and alike, but there is no real society. Man and woman are not companions. The difference in sexes places a barrier between them. Like that placed between animals by a difference in race."

Oh, this is getting smutty. By which I mean he is talking about all kinds of 'thinkers' with proto-eugenicist views on how poor people shouldn't reproduce. And Proudhon talks about the difference between onanism and masturbation, which is fun, and spilling 'outside the vessel'.

Ruxandra Grrr FOR FUCK'S SAKE PROUDHON can you not see, in your 500-page magnum opus on property, how women are treated as property and that is THEFT?? Theft from them as reproducers (in the sense of reproductive labor?) I'm about to lose my shit. Probably because of my period (topical sarcasm and also reality urgh).

Corinne Ugh. That's disappointing!

Ruxandra Grrr @Corinne, yeah, and I remember that you read about relationship anarchy, so this is interesting, maybe: later he talks about how all men have a right be loved above anyone else (by their wives, basically), and a bunch of other things that would piss off any relationship anarchist (me included!). He talks a fair bit about basically having hierarchy in relationships :/

And now it's hard to take him seriously with these glaring gaps in his thinking!

Corinne Gross. That sounds like that podcast excerpt that was making the rounds a couple of weeks ago about intervening to address the male loneliness epidemic. I hope you can take the good parts from the book despite those big gaps. Looking forward to seeing your other reactions!
