Some serious logical sleight of hand in this book.
“in all things not contrary to the moral law (that is to say, the law of nature) all subjects are bound to obey that for divine law which is declared to be so by the laws of the commonwealth” (188).

What a monstrous undertaking. Best of luck reading this Poseidon of a whopper. Is it summariz-able in one sentence? Where’s the beef? Wrap it up, s’il vous plait. I anticipate with great delight your review. Book It!

So far the reading as has been interesting. This book is one that often gets invoked in contemporary, popular contexts (including very recently in US politics) but usually in a very limited way. There is a lot of nuance about the responsibilities of a commonwealth that are worth thinking about.
