This book makes me laugh. It’s an Earth thing, you discover something, and you get to name it. The pop culture references to Rocky Balboa and Star Trek are great and cute.

“I laugh as I float into the lab where Rocky is waiting. “On Earth, we have a scary, deadly creature called a spider. You look like one of those. Just so you know.” “Good. Proud. I am scary space monster. You are leaky space blob.”
There are moments like these that are actually super funny within the context of the story.

That’s a curveball, and a decent one too. This information puts a “call-to-action” completely on its head, and it explains the temporary amnesia. How horrible of a thing to do to someone though. She should be tried and sentenced to prison, and she probably will be. Who knows how it will end.

De. Grace comes off a bit rude at times, which while I don’t love it because it’s to another character, it does make him seem more human. The ship is so thought out that you can practically model it from the writing alone. Cool details. The lights are out.

The narrative is quite successful at making you feel attached to the characters. One of the major plot points of the novel takes me out of the story. I get that it’s supposed to be sci-fi, but I can’t wrap my head around this one part.

I’m liking it’s development. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but I appreciate the math and thought put into designing the setting and the characters. The way Weir introduces new information in the form of flashbacks sets the pacing of the story in a way that makes one want to just keep reading.
