Up to this point you get introduced to some characters mainly Tess and her father. Her father seems not to be a self motivating person, & hears through a pastor of what is determined to be his family lineage & how grand they were. This goes to Tess' fathers head. He believes that he is as grand as they come & believes this will bring him fortune & high regards in society, along with Tess wedding a fine gentleman.
