“When I first lay my eyes upon Oliver Twist, his face brings to mind the inside of St Paul’s. Of chiselled cherubs, of sculpted saints. For the boy’s face is angelic, flaxen hair curled against his ruddy cheeks. He has a mouth like - not a rosebud, but a pale pink peony like them flower sellers sell. His skin is dirty, but the clean patches are pale and as fine as onion skin.”
