DAUCHTER (to the OFFICER: Isn't there a single happy human being in this paradise?
OFFICER: Yes, those newlyweds! Listen to them! (The newlyweds enter.)
HUSBAND (to his WIFE: My happiness is so great at this moment i wish I could die...
WIFE: Why die?
HUSBAND: Because in the midst of happiness grows a seed of un-happiness. Happiness consumes itself like a flame. It can't burn forever; sooner or later it must die. And that knowledge destroys the joy for me, right at its peak.
WIFE: Let us die together then, right now!
HUSBAND: Die? Very well. I'm afraid of happiness. It's deceitful!
(They cross toward the sea.)
