Small gripe, but it always annoys me in HP fanfic when the characters say “oh gods”. It’s not canon or fanon that the HP world worships any god or gods 🙃 Especially when it Hermione that says it. I picture her agnostic as she’s pragmatic and more so scientific.

Yeah, that doesn’t fit the ‘verse properly. I can picture Hermione swearing with “Merlin’s beard” like Slughorn, or just saying Shit like a muggle…but oh gods? Nah.

@Sarah Mac Exactly! I’ll even stretch and say something about Circe or Rihannon. When I see “oh gods” I don’t have much faith in the rest of the fic in terms of authenticity.
Dear authors everywhere: When in doubt, please use ‘regular’ curse words (or sex words, lol). It makes things read more smoothly. 🫣 I don’t care if it’s high fantasy, urban fantasy, whatever…it’s just so much easier to deal with.
@Sarah Mac I feel like “oh gods” has now become “standard” romantasy swear so that’s why it’s used so often even in fic. The author of this fic just admitted they didn’t read the og books, so it makes sense now 😅. Tbh I’m debating on dnf’ing bc of it. I feel like if someone is writing fic they need to be familiar with the original source material.
…Wait, what? They haven’t read the actual books?! Instant DNF right there, lol. I don’t care if you’re overturning every aspect of the novels—you can’t fanfic without first knowing where things came in the world you’re fanfic’ing. 😂
I always read “oh gods” as a colloquial phrase not actual belief in. Though paganism themes are fairly popular in fic. When I was young I gave paganism a try and I remember trying to claim HP as pagan but someone smarter me shot me down pointing out there is never real sign of paganism. Those also pointed there is a mention of ghost nuns at Hogwarts. After that I gave it more thought, I was forgetting how intertwined old beliefs are with English Christianity. I was forgetting the Green Men in churches. To Americans and me being Australian it did seem very pagan at first.
I want a fic with a religious history of the Purebloods that isn't pagan. There's so much potential there. Very not PC though lol.
I could totally see purebloods being part of the Protestant vs Catholic war. The purebloods not wanting to ruled by a muggle etc...
Or are the royals are purebloods... there's so much that could be done with a Christian pureblood plot line.
Or maybe the purebloods could have their own religion.
@Sarah Mac agreed! Idk it rubs me the wrong way when people fanfic about movies of the books are available to be read.
