It is not just that this is over 800 pages (2.45 lbs per my kitchen scale -- I was curious) it is that I have already had to do research on cabala and Lenin's sex life, and I am only 36 pages in. That said, I am already a little in love with this book. I consider this the counterweight to The Wayfinder. This is a different way to approach history through fiction, and so far I am a fan. Big fan. Huge.

Oh, great, I also have a copy on my physical bookshelf! I've heard that this book gets a lot of love from Americans, but not so much from Europeans. We should test this theory and, above all, find out why that might be!!

Weirdly, I actually thought "Justin and Meike woujld like this one," when I was reading.
Meike, I would love to test the US vs. EU theory! You are a much faster reader than I am, so maybe give me a 300-page head start? I would have expected this to appeal more to Europeans, since Americans get such abysmal 20th-century history education. I have been on a tear with revisiting the Stalin-era lately, seeing as we have apparently decided to revisit that in 2026 America, and so far this book is giving me everything I didn't know I wanted about Stalin's early days.
Justin, if you are interested, I can send you my copy when I am done. Warning: It takes up a lot of night table real estate.
