Joyce > Status Update

I struggle to comprehend books with abstract plots, kinda reminds me of 1984. Some parts I understand (like Joe's mutilated body and such) but a lot of the book is just a lot of extended metaphors and assuming what he's thinking. I know that it's largely anti-war prose, but is there any other larger meaning??
