i stand corrected on the sex scenes! i think we’re def seeing ilya use sex as a means of escape/temporary happiness, while shane uses it as a way to (in some cases!) replace the intimacy that comes with having tough/necessary convos. they want to feel close to each other — and they aren’t in many ways — so sex is the way they try to achieve that

chapters 14 and 15 were actually quite great. i feel like i’m always trashing RR’s writing, but those chapters were very enjoyable
