Three of the greatest intelligence fails in American history were the failure to read the warning signals for Pearl Harbor, for 9/11 and for the counter attack in the Ardennes on the Allied advance by German troops. The latter is recorded in history as the Battle of the Bulge - so called because of the bulge in American lines due to the assault. Here we have the POV of both sides of that December 1944 winter war.

Whenever I read a book about Europe during the WW2 era I always think about family in Magdeburg. They would have fought in the Luftwaffe or Heer or perhaps were sailors on German ships and submarines. And blood family would have been in the USN or RCAF opposing them.

I don’t know the whole story but there was correspondence from them after the war. That ended once the Wall went up in 1961. Permanently.

Well read by the narrator, I.J. Gander.

A harrowing experience. War unvarnished and the human cost of war unhidden.

I’ve come through the savagery of Operation Market Garden. The Allies are in December and think the war is just about over. But the largest land battle on the western front is about to crash down upon their heads.
