I was hoping to like this, but so far I find the protagonist and her voice to be quite grating. I was appreciating her initial desire for something interesting to happen in her life, ala the musings of Eleanor in the beginning of The Haunting of Hill House, but now that things are happening she mostly likes to snark about them, which just irritates me.

Around 40% through we have taken a sudden turn for much better, at least until Opal opens her mouth again. The scene of her madly returning to Starling House and the action that follows is exactly what I was wanting, and is a welcome change! We will see how things progress.

Getting dangerously close to a DNF. Opal is a deeply insufferable protag and I'm desperate for some of the gothic atmosphere we had going on in the opening chapters to return. I want more house and more spooky goings on, less Opal thinking she knows best for her brother and looking down at other people in town.
