It had taken her far too long to learn things didn’t have to be either-or. The truth was that she could have it all if she wanted, and she couldn’t wait to see what adventures lay in store.

Grief wasn’t something that was severed with the axe-stroke of a single action. It would take time, fading a bit with each passing day.

“All paths are dark until the sun finds them.” Tinktink released her hold. “But there is always hope.”

Halfway up the ridge, Hilda’s muscles began to cramp and her lungs were burning, but she refused to quit. It had been at least fifty years since she’d run like this, back when her children were young. Old age might have softened her a bit, but she still had the heart of an adventurer.

“I don’t know.” Hilda stroked her beard. “You’d think at my age, there would be very little that surprises me, but this journey has been proof of just how wrong that sentiment can be. The world is full of wonder, and I’m grateful for a chance to experience it, whatever lies in store.”

She found herself experiencing a strange sensation, like two parts of her life had blended into one. The young girl who’d once sat upon her grandmother’s lap listening to tales of exploration and daring feats was now part of her very own adventure, spending her mornings training and evenings hunting.

“Everyone is afraid of something, child.” Hilda squeezed. “That’s part of living.”
