I love the creativity of the aliens, however I see Clarke’s biases on consciousness seeping through. Calling sharks “mindless automata” or describing biospheres as places where consciousness will never emerge seem like a naive (almost prideful?) view of consciousness, with such a firm definition. Does he think that human level (and beyond) intelligence only equals consciousness? This was published in 1982…
